Hypena proboscidalis

Description

Wingspan 36 - 42mm. The long and up-turned palps give this species its distinctive 'snout' and, at rest, its wings form an equilateral triangle. Its colour varies slightly but normally it is barred with shades of brown, buff-brown and grey-brown.

Habitat

A wide variety of habitats are used, anywhere where the foodplant, nettle, grows.

Status and distribution

Common and widespread throughout Britain. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

May to October.
