Agrotis exclamationis

Description

Wingspan 30 to 38mm. Very variable but often pale with a black dagger shape and a heart shape on the fore-wing, but can be almost black. There is a black line forming a collar that can be seen when viewed from the front.

Habitat

Rough ground, field margins, anywhere that plants such as ribwort Plantain or Fat Hen grow.

Status and distribution

Common and widespread throughout Britain. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

May to July.
