Description

Wingspan 40mm. There is a crescent shaped mark on the hind-wing. This species is very variable both in ground colour and the intensity of the markings.

Habitat

A wide range of habitats can be used where nettles, docks, hawthorn, bramble and sallows are the larval food-plants.

Status and distribution

Common and widespread throughout Britain. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

June to September.
