Xanthorhoe montanata
Description
Wingspan 29 - 33mm. Pale, whitish to grey fore-wings with a band of dark red to brown markings. Quite variable but distinctive.
Habitat
Damp places, including woodland edge, hedgerows, parks and gardens. Rank damp vegetation where the caterpillars feed on bedstraws and goose-grass.
Status and distribution
Common and widespread throughout Britain. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.
Best time to see
May to July.
