Dark Barred Twin-spot Carpet

Xanthorhoe ferrugata

Description

Wingspan 24 - 27mm. Has a broad dark band across the fore-wings and a pale band towards the wing's hind edge which has a pair of black spots in it.

Habitat

A wide range of habitats are used, including woodland edge, hedgerows, gardens and fens. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of bedstraws, dock and ground-ivy.

Status and distribution

Common and widespread in England and Wales, local in Scotland. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

May to August in two broods.
