Red Underwing
Catocala nupta
Description
Forewing 33 - 40mm, The forewings are grey with a pattern of lighter and darker zig-zag lines. The hind wings are red with a black border and centre line.
Habitat
A range of habitats where the larval food plants of poplars and willows can be found.
Status and distribution
Common and widespread in the south and east as far as the Midlands. Less common in the West Country, west Wales and the north of England. Fairly common in Nottinghamshire and recorded once at Netherfield Lagoons.
Best time to see
August to October.
