Description
Wingspan 30 - 34mm. The cream edged dark marks on the fore-wing are said to resemble the long nose and chin of Mother Shipton, a Yorkshire witch. Flies by day, in sunshine.
Habitat
Grasslands and meadows. The caterpillar feeds on clovers, vetches and some grasses.
Status and distribution
Common and well distributed in southern Britain, less so further north. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.
Best time to see
May to July.
