Description

Wingspan 50 - 70mm. Colour varies from yellow to dark brown. There is a dark brown, diagonal cross-line on the fore-wing that extends all the way to the wing-tip and two, one large one small, dark bordered pale spots. The caterpillars are regularly seen on grasses or crossing footpaths.

Habitat

Damp grasslands and reed beds. The caterpillar feeds on coarse grasses and reeds.

Status and distribution

Fairly common and widespread in southern Britain. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

July to August.
