Lasiocampa quercus

Description

Wingspan 45 to 75mm. The male is two-toned red-brown with a yellowish band across the wing. The female is similar but a paler colour. Both have a white spot on the near part of the forewing. The caterpillar is dark brown and orange in its early instars. The final instar is reddish-brown with black bars between the segments.

Habitat

A wide range of habitats are used including Woodland edge, hedgerows and scrub. The larvae feed on a wide range of plants including bramble, sallow and hawthorn.

Status and distribution

Common and widespread through most of Britain. Common in Nottinghamshire and recorded twice at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

July to August.
