Description

Wingspan 41 - 48mm. The wings are mostly grey with a variable amount of brown markings. There is a black mark towards the front edge of the fore-wings and a broad black band behind the head.

Habitat

Damp grasslands, woodland rides  and marshes. The larvae mainly feed on tufted vetch.

Status and distribution

Local, mostly in the southern half of Britain. Fairly common and widespread in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

June to July.
