Description

Wingspan 40mm. The ground colour can be quite variable from a cold greyish brown to a warm reddish brown. The cross-lines are not very distinct but the kidney mark is diagnostically square.

Habitat

Grasslands, in gardens, woodland rides or rough ground. The caterpillar feeds on grasses, plantains and goose-grass.

Status and distribution

Common and widespread throughout most of lowland Britain. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

August to September.
