Birch Shieldbug
Elasmostethus interstinctus
Description
Body length 8 - 12mm. A variable green and reddish-brown shieldbug. Like a small version of the Hawthorn Shieldbug Acanthosoma haemorrhoidalis, but with no reddish colouring on the lateral extensions of the scutellum.
Habitat
Mixed Birch woodlands. The larvae feed on Birch, Aspen and Hazel.
Status and distribution
Distributed throughout Britain but commonest in England and Wales. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.
Best time to see
March to November.
