White-winged Bibio

Bibio leucopterus

Description

Wing-length 8mm. Like a small St. Mark's Fly with milky wings. The female has dark wings. The spurs on the tibiae of the front legs are almost equal in length.

Habitat

Can be found in woodlands and wetland areas. The larvae feed in the soil.

Status and distribution

Found throughout lowland areas of England, Scotland and Wales. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

April to June.
