Bibio clavipes

Description

Over all length 6 to 8mm. The male has large eyes and a shiny thorax. The wings have a discrete stigma and the hind legs have swollen metatarsal segments.  The female is reddish with reddish legs.

Habitat

Damp areas where their larvae can develop in the humus.

Status and distribution

Thinly distributed throughout Britain. Found in the reed beds at the reserve.

Best time to see

July to October.
