St Mark’s Fly

Bibio johannis

Description

Over all length 6 - 8mm.  The males have very large round eyes and a shiny thorax. The wings have a strong black stigma and the lower parts of the legs are an orange-brown.

Habitat

Hedgerows and rank, damp grassland.

Status and distribution

Has been recorded from the south coast to the north of Scotland with a tendency to the lowlands further north. Not very often found on the reserve.

Best time to see

Late April to Early May.
