Dark Autumn Bibio
Bibio longipes
Description
Over all length 8mm. A slim, long-legged black Bibio. It is very similar to Bibio clavipes, but the stigma is larger and more obvious. The females are black with reddish legs.

Woodland edge and rides but the ones photographed were within the wooded part of the reed-bed. The larvae are thought to develop in the soil, feeding on roots and vegetable matter.
Status and distribution
Widespread but local throughout England and Wales. Recorded in good numbers at Netherfield Lagoons.
Best time to see
September to October.
