Description

Wingspan 40mm. The fore-wings are grey-brown with a broad golden-yellow bar. They also have a kidney mark and oval mark on the golden bar.

Habitat

Woodland edge, grasslands and marshes. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of thistles, burdocks, figworts, ragworts and hemp-agrimony.

Status and distribution

Common and widespread throughout most of Britain. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

August to September.
