Woolly Alder Sawfly

Description

Body length 5 - 7mm. A black sawfly with a red thorax and lightly tinted wings.

Habitat

Damp woodland and water's edge where Alders grow. The larvae feed on Alder leaves.

Status and distribution

Local but widespread in the south of Britain. Fairly common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

May to August.
