Description

Body length 5 - 7mm.  A black sawfly with a bright red thorax and darkly shaded wings.

Habitat

Meadows and grassy areas. The larvae feed on grasses, particularly Poa species.

Status and distribution

Widespread in England and Wales, less common in Scotland. Fairly common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

May to July.
