Dolerus gonager

Description

Body length 8 to 9mm. A mainly black sawfly with red on the legs. There are four similar species and the one illustrated is probably D. gonager.

Habitat

The larvae feed on grasses but the adults can be found on meadow flowers.

Status and distribution

Fairly common across most of Britain and in Nottinghamshire. Recorded once at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

May to June.
