Description

Body length 7 - 8mm. A long-legged fly with a long body and black, white and red marked head.

Habitat

Damp grasslands and hedgerows. It feeds on small insects, such as aphids and the honeydew excreted by them.

Status and distribution

Common and widespread throughout Britain. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

May to August.
