Small Fleck-winged Snipe-fly

Description
Wing length 7mm. A small Snipe-fly with clear wings, apart from a strong dark stigma. The thorax is a pale grey and the abdomen orange-brown with darker brown triangles on each segment. The fore and middle femora are yellowish with a dark apical ring.
Habitat
Damp woodland edge and hedgerows, where the adults sit on leaves, waiting for their prey, smaller flies.
Status and distribution
Common and widespread in Britain. Common in Nottinghamshire and recorded at Netherfield Lagoons.
Best time to see
May to September.
