Description

Body length 4mm. An orange fly with four black spots on its abdomen.

Habitat

Grasslands, hedgerows, woodland edge. The adults feed from flowers and the larvae are thought to feed on the micro-organisms in decaying vegetation.

Life History

Common and widespread though-out England and Wales. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.
