Five-spotted Snailkiller

Hydromya dorsalis

Description

Over all length 5.5mm. The most striking feature of this fly is the five spots on the fore-wing, four of the spots in a straight line. The thorax is grey/blue and the abdomen and legs are red/brown.

Habitat

Marshy places with rushes and sedges. The larvae feed on aquatic snails.

Status and distribution

Common and widespread throughout Britain. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

All year.
