Dark-winged Fungus Gnat
Sciara hemerobioides
Description
Over all length 5 - 6mm. The head, thorax, wings and legs are black. The abdomen is bright yellow with black dorsal and ventral lines. It is very difficult to ascribe fungus gnats to species.
Habitat
A wide range of habitats are used, where the adults feed on flowers and the larvae feed on fungus and fungal mycelia in compost.
Status and distribution
Common and widespread throughout most of Britain. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.
Best time to see
July to August.
