Black Colonel

Odontomyia tigrina

Description

Body length 7 - 9mm. A medium-sized black species with pale yellow legs. The male has black wing veins towards the front of the wings, brownish in the female.

Habitat

The well vegetated margins of ponds and ditches. The larvae feed on the emergent plants.

Status and distribution

Local and restricted to the south-east of Britain. Rare in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons (this is possibly the first county record).

Best time to see

April to July.
