Big-thighed Pipiza
Pipiza austriaca
Description
Wing length 6 to 7mm. A long-bodied black species with large dark patches on its wings and a swollen hind femur.
Habitat
Woodland edges, hedgerows and meadows. Adults are found on buttercups and umbellifers, the larvae feeding on aphids.
Status and distribution
Fairly widespread but local in England and Wales. Uncommon in Nottinghamshire and recorded once at Netherfield Lagoons.
Best time to see
May to September.
