Description
Over all length 3 - 5mm. Small black or metallic flies with clear wings. The eyes are green banded with purple. There are several species that are very similar, so it was not possible to get to species.
Habitat
Field margins and woodland edge. The larvae develop in decaying vegetable matter and manure heaps.
Status and distribution
Common and widespread in England and Wales, less so in Scotland. Fairly common in Nottinghamshire and recorded at Netherfield Lagoons.
Best time to see
May to September.
