Band-eyed Wingwaver

Physiphora alceae

Description

Over all length 3 - 5mm. Small metallic green fly with clear wings. The eyes are green banded with purple.

Habitat

Field margins and woodland edge. The larvae develop in decaying vegetable matter and manure heaps.

Status and distribution

Common and widespread in England as far north as Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. On the edge of its range in Notts. and recorded once at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

May to September.
