Platycheirus clypeatus
Description
Wing length - 5 to 7.5mm. This is one of a group of very similar hoverflies and subtle differences need to be recognised for identification. The photo shows what is probably Platycheirus clypeatus.
Habitat
Damp grasslands and vegetation close to water. The larvae are thought to feed on aphids.
Status and distribution
Common and widespread throughout most of Britain, the commonest and most widespread of the group of similar species. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.
Best time to see
April to October.
