Ringed Orange Longtail

Phylidorea ferruginea

Description

Over all length 16 - 19mm.  An orange cranefly of marshy areas. The head is grey but there are no black markings on the thorax of this species. The legs are the same colour as the thorax, but with darker joints and the wings have an orange suffusion to them.

Habitat

Wetlands and boggy areas with plenty of decaying organic matter.

Status and distribution

This is a fairly common marshland species but has only occasionally been recorded on the reserve.

Best time to see

April to September.
