Description

Over all length 5mm. A small, dark bodied fly with well marked wings.

Habitat

Open areas, grasslands and hedgerows. The larvae feed inside grass stems. Can be an agricultural pest.

Status and distribution

Fairly common throughout Britain. Not very common on the reserve.

Best time to see

May to August.
