Light Emerald

Campaea margaritata

Description

Wingspan 30 - 40mm.  The wings are pale green, fading to almost white as the insect ages. There are two thin white lines across the wings, which curve forwards towards the front edge. The slightly hooked tip of the fore-wing has a small, blood-red mark.

Habitat

Woodland, woodland edge, scrub and hedgerows where the caterpillar feeds on the leaves of a variety of hardwoods including oak, hawthorn and blackthorn.

Status and distribution

Common and well distributed throughout most of England, Wales and lowland Scotland. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

June to August.
