Orchard/Willow Small Ermine Moth
Yponomeuta padella/rorrella
Description
Wingspan 20mm. A large genus of very similar white or pale grey moths with black spots. It is thought the picture is probably of one of these two species.
Habitat
The larvae feed on the leaves of trees, such as willow, apple, cherry or spindle and can shroud the entire tree - or several trees - in their larval web.
Status and distribution
Yponomeuta padella is fairly widespread and common in England and Wales, but Yponomeuta rorrella is more local.
Best time to see
July to August.
