Description

Wingspan 45mm. A variable species with mottled greys on all four wings. The scalloped rear edge to the hind wings and black cross line are constant.

Habitat

Woodland, scrub and hedgerows. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of a wide variety of woody and herbaceous plants.

Status and distribution

Common and widespread throughout Britain. Common and widespread in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

June to August.
