Description

Wingspan 42 - 50mm. This moth is mostly dark grey with rust-like blotches and lines.

Habitat

Woodlands and waste ground. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of alder, birch, hazel and oak.

Status and distribution

Common and widespread in England and Wales, less common and widespread in Scotland. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

April to September in two broods.
