Canary-shouldered Thorn

Ennomos alniaria

Description

Wingspan 32 to 40mm. The wings are pale yellowish brown with two thin bars across them and some mottled shading. The thorax is covered with bright yellow hairs.

Habitat

Woodlands, parklands and heathlands where birches are abundant. Also found on Alder, Elm and Lime.

Status and distribution

Common and widespread in England and Wales and lowland Scotland. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

July to October.
