Description

Wingspan 25 - 28mm. The fore-wings have a bright orange/yellow ground colour with a broad irregular red/brown to purple/brown bar, making this moth unmistakable.

Habitat

Woodland edge, hedgerows, scrubby areas and gardens. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of roses.

Status and distribution

Fairly common and widely distributed in England, Wales and lowland Scotland. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

June to August.
