Calliphora vomitoria

Description

Over all length 10 - 14mm. This genus contains several very similar insects which are not easy to identify to species. They have a metallic blue colour and are generally fairly large flies. Calliphora vomitoria is a large blue species that can be identified by its orange 'beard'.

Habitat

Most habitats are inhabited, the larvae feeding in dung or carrion and the adults visiting flowers.

Status and distribution

Common throughout the British isles. Regularly seen at the reserve.

Best time to see

All year. Hibernating as adults.
