Wharf Borer
Nacerdes melanura
Description
Over all length 8.5 - 10mm. A brown beetle with black tips to the elytra. It can look very similar to a soldier beetle (Cantharis sp.).
Habitat
The larvae feed on rotting timber and can infest wooden ships or wharves. The adults are said not to feed, but the one in the photographs seems to be feeding on pollen or nectar.
Status and distribution
A rare beetle inland, with most of its distribution being coastal. There is one other recent record for Nottinghamshire. Recorded once at Netherfield Lagoons.
Best time to see
June to July.
