St. John’s Wort Beetle

Cryptocephalus moraei

Description

Over all length 3 - 5mm. A small black beetle with yellow, or sometimes red, markings. The markings vary a little, with some more heavily marked than others.

Habitat

The adults feed on the flowers and leaves of Perforated St. John's Wort.

Status and distribution

Fairly common and widespread in southern Britain. Uncommon in Nottinghamshire and recorded twice at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

May to August.
