Rustic Soldier Beetle

Cantharis rustica

Description

Over all length 9 - 13mm. A red and black species with the red restricted to the bases of the antennae, femora and pronotum. The pronotum has a black spot that does not reach the front edge. The abdomen, covered by the black elytra, is also red.

Habitat

Hedgerows and grasslands. The larvae develop in the soil or leaf litter, feeding on small invertebrates.

Status and distribution

Common and widespread in the south east, becoming less common further north and west and uncommon in Scotland. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

May to June.
