Ground Beetle
Abax parallelipipedus
Description
Body length 17 - 22mm. Shining black. The pronotum has two parallel grooves and is about the same width as the elytra.
Habitat
Damp woodland, under logs and litter, where they seek out slugs. The larvae are known to eat earthworms.
Status and distribution
Common and widespread in the south east, Midlands and Wales but less common elsewhere. Fairly common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.
Best time to see
May to September.
