Athous haemorrhoidalis

Description

Body length 10 - 11mm. The thorax is dark, blackish and the elytra (wing cases) are slightly lighter brown. It is fairly hairy all over. When seen in flight the abdomen is a yellow/orange.

Habitat

Woodland edge and grasslands. The larvae (wireworms) feed on roots.

Status and distribution

One of our commonest click beetles and commonest in England and Wales, less so in Scotland. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

May to August.
