Two-girdled Digger Wasp

Argogorytes mystaceus

Description

Body length 10 - 13mm. Black with a yellow collar on the thorax and yellow scutellum. The abdomen is also black with three yellow bands. The legs are all orange/brown and the wings are smoked grey.

Habitat

Woodland edge, hedgerows with tall vegetation.

Status and distribution

Widespread throughout most of southern Britain, less so further north. Uncommon in Nottinghamshire but regular at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

April to September.
