Description

All black except for a broad red band on the abdomen and silvery hairs on the thorax and face.

Habitat

Open ground, woodland edge, hedgerows where the soil is sandy so that it can make its nest burrows. Also there need to be plenty of shieldbug nymphs about to stock its brood chambers with.

Status and distribution

Restricted to the south and east of England, where it is fairly common. Rare in Nottinghamshire and recorded once at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

June to August.
