Large Shield Wasp

Crabro cribrarius

Description

Over all body length 10 to 15mm. The largest and one of the commonest Crabro species. The male is easily identified by the large 'shields' on its fore-legs.

Habitat

Normally found on coastal dunes or heathland or other open sites. They can often be found visiting umbellifers.

Status and distribution

Widespread but local throughout England, Scotland and Wales. Local in Nottinghamshire and recorded once at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

June to August.
