Flesh Fly

Sarcophaga species

Description

Over all length 10 - 15mm. A family of large, red-eyed flies, with a grey thorax and abdomen, well marked with black. Most are not identifiable to species without microscopic inspection. Those named as Sarcophaga carneria are now thought to be three species within a group which are very difficult to separate. Sarcophaga haemorrhoa is thought to be the species in the last three photographs.

Habitat

Hedgerows and woodland edge.

Status and distribution

Common through most of Britain. Regularly seen at the reserve.
