Description

Body length 9mm. This species is very dark, with a dark grey thorax that has three black longitudinal lines. The wings are tinted grey and have yellowish bases. The legs are all black.

Habitat

Woodland edge and hedgerows. The adults feed on other insects, mostly flies and the larvae live in the leaf litter, feeding on small invertebrates.

Status and distribution

Widespread in Britain though not particularly common. Recorded twice at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

March to May.
