Truffle Blacklet

Cheilosia soror

Description

Wing length 7.5 to 9mm. A mostly black species but the females have a brownish tip to the scutellum. There are two similar species, C. longula and C. scutellata, so care must be taken with identification.

Habitat

Woodland rides and grassy areas. The larvae feed on fungi.

Status and distribution

Mostly restricted to southern England and parts of Wales. Uncommon in Nottinghamshire and recorded once at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

June to October.
