Sphaerophoria loewi

Description

Wing length 6 to 7mm. Unlike most other Sphaerophoria species the legs and scutelum are orange, not yellow. The antennae are black and the yellow bar at the side of the thorax is broken above the wing base.

Habitat

This species is normally found on saltmarshes and often close to large beds of common reeds.

Status and distribution

Rare with scattered coastal records, mainly on the south coast. Not recorded before in Nottinghamshire. Recorded once at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

June to September.
